 How Long Has It Been?
How long has it been since I’ve gone for a bike ride? My last bike ride was on 7/9 – three weeks ago today. I rode to and from work that Thursday.

How long has my road bike (Dory) been in the bike shop? It’s been just over three weeks – I think it was taken in on 7/7. Turns out Dory needs a new frame – that came in last week. Turns out, since they had to upgrade the frame (to a Roubaix) the new frame needs a couple new parts for everything to work right – those should be in this week. I’m expecting a call from the bike shop any day now…

How long has it been since I’ve played in a softball game? It will be three weeks ago, tomorrow (7/10). It was while playing the softball game that I came to a conclusion that I needed to return to the eye doctor because of the vision issues I had been experiencing off and on over the past several weeks. I’ve gone and watched the last two softball games, but wasn’t able (allowed) to play.

How long has it been since my church softball team has not qualified for the playoffs? It’s been at least 10 years – I can remember details of the last 9 years – but I don’t recall not being in the playoffs once we started qualifying in the early 90’s. OK, the team not making the playoffs does not have any direct correlation with my eye surgery, I just thought it was worth noting.

How long has it been since my eye surgery? It’s been two weeks, as of today. And it’s because of the eye surgery that I have not been able to ride my bike (to commute or recreationally), or play in the last two softball games of the season over the last 2+ weeks.

I have gone back to the doctor, for follow-up visits, and each time the Dr stated that everything on the inside is looking good (one visit the other doctor said, "Perfect!" and "A+ work!") I am now able to drive, again, but still limited to local driving.

So, when will I get on my bike again? Not 100% sure, yet. But I feel that I’m walking a tightrope because of a couple dates coming up. First is the Dog Prairie Century on 8/8 – just over a week away. Don’t know if I’ll be able to get any riding in (on the new version of Dory) before next Saturday, let alone how much stamina my legs, lungs & butt will have to attempt the 100 miles. The second is the Gateway Chapter of the MS Society’s MS Bike ride on September 12 & 13. It’s a little ways off yet, but a) I still need to start my pledge drive and b) for me it is 175-200 miles over the two days. One saving grace for this year’s ride is a slight change of location for the start/finish, and the routes are touted as being easier (one of the two routes the last few years took everything out of me in 2007).

How long has it been since I’ve gone for a bike ride? Mentally, it has been too long. From a fitness standpoint, it’s been too long. But from a physically fit (i.e. recovery) standpoint, it has not been quite long enough, yet.
