Took yesterday off to try to get a little rest and avoid more damp weather in hope that my cold would not get any worse. Warmed up nice in the morning so decided to get out early and do a little climbing. Started up Jackson Hill and had a fair climb to Catherine though not a record setter. Goal today was to continue the climb past Catherine and ascend Beardsley Hollow with intent not to hammer but to climb strong with a high cadence and not to break as I hit the eighteen plus grade near the top of the challenging hill as I usually do. Started up the shallow section at the bottom of the hollow and started to pick up the average which was encouraging. Hollow is kind of deceptive as the climb doesn't feel too bad on the second half of the climb as the grade varies between a spinable ten percent and an occasional short fifteen percent step. Coming out of the hollow the top of the climb becomes visible and it doesn't look to far away and that the climb is almost over. Then the eighteen percent sections just keep coming. Concentrated hard over the top to just suck up the pain and keep the legs churning and actually got over the top without giving in. Downhill section to Sullivinville is really not good road surface and sat in and rested until hitting the SR 13. Once I got on the highway I started to hammer to see if I could turn my good climbing into a good fast day. Had to put some effort in to keep the speed up as the headwind cancelled out my downgrade. Was in good shape as I rolled through Hanover Square and thought I would get a great time as I turned into the downgrade with the tailwind. Speed stagnated a bit as I tried unsuccessfully to keep it up to the crest in Pine Valley. Always enjoy going over the crest it is actually more relevant then crossing a state line as rivers to the south of the crest flow south to the Chesapeake Bay, while north of it water flows to the Atlantic via the St Lawrence River. Also it marks the highpoint of this section of SR 14 and it is all high speed back to Montour- well at least when there is a south wind. Hammered down it and finished over eighteen overall which is about as good as I'm ever going to do with two thousand feet of climbing in the first seven mile of the ride.
Went out in the afternoon and did another twenty miles of mild climbing around Montour and Watkins. Legs were pretty beat but temperature was back up into the high seventies, the winds were calm and it wasn't raining. Felt great to be out on the bike.
