Time again for the annual Run to the Lake-a long ride from Montour Falls straight up SR 14 to Lake Ontario then straight back. There are only two real climbs on the trip. The first is out of Watkins on the way out and the second is out of Dryden on the return leg. Although there are only two climbs there are many, many rollers but all in all a fairly flat route for the Finger Lakes. Shamed Mighty Young Joe into accompanying me this year and we headed out at six AM with temperatures in the low sixties and a slight tailwind. We rode side by side up the first climb of the day but went into a two man pace line after cresting the hill. We traded pulls in the mid-twenties most of the way to Himrod and the miles flew by. We kind of shut it down as we descended into Dryden but were happy that our average was comfortably over a twenty miles per hour average. Joe noticed that he had lost a water bottle along the way and it probably bounced out when we bunny hopped the tracks in Himrod. Joe Camel didn't think it would be a problem as we would be refueling at Sodus Point. We cruised easily from Geneva to Lyons and I regaled him with my knowledge of the movie "Slugs" that was filmed in Lyons. He one upped me with tales of Tarzan, the Little Rascals and Addams Family that were partially filmed in his stomping ground of Ithaca. We had to pick up the pace through the rollers south of Sodus as our cruising had let the average slip below twenty but got it back up as we descended to the lake. Purchased some supplies at the local gas station and went down to the park to eat our goodies. Drank quite a bit but didn't have an appetite and threw most of my food away. We started back on the return leg and Joe dropped me on a small climb and found that my legs were feeling pretty heavy. He slowed down and waited for me but I was having a hard time staying in his draft. I didn't feel too bad just didn't have any power. Decided to take it easy and spin it out rather than push my body that had collapsed on me earlier in the week. Asked Joe to hammer on ahead and enjoy the day and trailed him for a few miles as he gradually rode away. Lost sight of him in Lyons and didn't see him again for the rest of the ride. He went on to finish the near one hundred and forty miles in under seven hours. I spun easily and did a little rubber necking and kept a decent pace. Saddle sores flared up as I climbed out of Geneva and found myself spending a good bit of time out of the saddle. Winds were mostly out of the west and provided a cooling crosswind. Started seeing spots on the second big climb of the day out of Dresden but once that was out of the way it was an easy cruise over the final twenty miles that included a very welcome long fast downhill into Watkins. Rolled into Watkins with a nineteen mile per hour average for the day which left me satisfied. Wished I could have stayed with Joe for the whole day but I'm not as young as I used to be back in the day.
