Put in a bad night as sore throat has returned. Rode to Logan and if I don't collaspe completely after the ride may try an ITT this afternoon. Stood up on Skyline the entire steep section and kept a comfortable speed to Logan into a slight headwind. Caught the tailwind back and returned the same section I rode at the end of yesterday's ride. Today I was spinning easy and getting speeds in the low twenties while yesterday I was riding myself into the ground and barely keeping the speed at 16 mph. A little wind and fresh legs make for a big difference. Saw no one out today. Returned on highway between Watkins and Montour. Paving appears to be complete though there were still a few guys and trucks about doing clean up. Registered for the Tour de Per-ry, strangely enough, a 40+ mile tour starting in Perry NY and passing through Letchworth Park this Saturday. Seems to be a low key ride with only nine people pre registered.
Felt a little better in the afternoon and got out my TT bike, which is just a conventional frame with Zipp wheels and bolt on TT bars, and decided to give the 10 mile course a go. Had a soft northeast wind at 5 mph to help on the way out. Started in a big gear and didn't get it going for the first half mile as I thought it might not be a strong day as I crested the first knoll at 22 mph when I usually hit it at 26 mph. Things started going well for the second and third mile as I started kicking the speed up in the thirties occasionally and things looked great at the three mile mark as the average speed was 25 mph. Couldn't hold it though and speed dropped a little by mile four then really tapered off on the final mile before the turnaround. Had to slow down for traffic at the turnaround in Millport and went from 24.3 to 24.0 before I could get it headed back in the right direction. Had trouble the first mile back and just got the average speed back up to 24.3 which is less than impressive. Mile seven and eight were golden though as I got started hitting speeds in the low thirties again. Speed started tapering off again to mile nine but was able to hold my earlier gains and passed the marker at 25.6 mph. Held the average speed through the final mile, the curse, and finished with a 23:30 time. Overall a strong ride for me as I had four of the ten miles in the thirties. Had three miles that leave room for improvement and the only part I was straining was through the curse. Remainder of the ride was at a comfortable pace.
