 Freedom Run Winery Road Race
Took yesterday off hoping to let the body recover but ended up with the same poor numbers of body battery and resting heart rate. Had a near three-hour drive to Lockport, NY for a circuit race put on by the Buffalo Cycling Club. It was hot at ninety degrees, but the humidity was low, so it wasn't near as bad as last week. I had to buy a one-day racing license to enter the Masters Race. The course was actually pretty good for me at seven laps of a seven-mile course with one half mile long hundred-foot climb at the start of each lap with the rest being rolling. Goal today was to try to stay with my teammate Bob on the climbs and suck wheel for the remainder of each lap. There were fifty plus riders at the start which consisted of women and men over forty-five. There was a controlled pace to the start of the first climb and then it was off to the races. I got through the first climb on the first lap okay though I had to stand for a bit while most of the rest just sat and spun. Pace picked up around the second corner and into the wind and I had a difficult time getting back in the draft after the climb. Unfortunately, my legs did not recover very well after the hard fast climbing and had to grab a couple of wheels before I was safely tucked in. Two or three very strong riders went off the front and there wasn't much of a reaction which was not surprising as the average speed for the pack for each lap was over twenty-three miles per hour. I had a decent climb on the second lap and kept myself in the front third of pack over the remainder of the lap. Third climb was okay but had to chase again over the top and around the second corner. Thought I would settle in and stay with the pack, but legs went totally dead on the fourth climb, and I was ejected out the back. Tried to work with a couple others that were also ejected but wasn't able to hang on to them and was completely isolated. I did catch up to one rider and we started the fifth climb together, but he was in worse shape than me and dropped off. I missed the third turn on the fifth lap. I thought it was the turn, but it turned out all the corners but this one were marked. I went a half mile or so before I was certain I had missed the turn and headed back. Finished off the course after two more climbs with each lap being a mile an hour slower than the last, I eventually finished the seven laps over twenty minutes down from the pack. Not sure if I was in last place or not but knew that a few riders had dropped out after being ejected from the pack as it is near impossible to catch back up once dropped. Bob was able to stay with the pack and won our age group so there was at least one thing positive about today's ride. I was really disappointed in my performance as had ridden well below my potential on a course that is suited to me. Thought dropping my mileage and taking more rest days would have been a good strategy but it didn't pan out today. Hopefully, the three laps I lasted at speed will help me later on in the month at the Spokeride taht is usually a high-speed event.
