 Thunderstruck
Legs still a little stiff from Saturdays century plus but went out and did some climbs today. Started out heading up Jackson Hill and had a less then spectacular climb as just couldn't get the heart rate to come up so took it easy and did some laid back climbing. Did a good deal of coasting down Ridge road to Horseheads then tried to fire the legs up on the short climb up Hickory Grove. Did fairly well out of the saddle though the leg strength was there the heart rate still wouldn't get out of cruising speed. Felt pretty good on the climb up Chambers Road and kept a steady pace at a high cadence and things were going well when the first thundershower hit. Rain came down pretty heavily but occasionally had dry roads under the shade of the trees as the storm seemed to be centered on the backside of the ridge I was climbing and though heard quite a bit of thunder didn't see any lightning. Felt refreshing to ride in the rain and though soaked, it wasn't by any means unpleasant in the heat. Storm had passed by the time I crested the hill and descended rapidly into Chambers on dry roads. Caught a tailwind in Chambers and headed across the false flats towards Watkins. Saw a huge storm ahead of me as I passed the Schuyler County line. It got very dark and a wall of water was visible a mile or so up the road from me. Thought with the tailwind that the storm would be pushed ahead of me and that I could avoid it by just riding slower than the storm was moving. Plan didn't work out very well as suddenly the wind changed and was blowing violently in my face. Had several lightning strikes nearby and soon found myself riding in a deluge. Road had a good shoulder and kept riding although it was difficult to see at times. Thought about stopping but considered that I probably had as good a chance of getting hit on the shoulder by cars pulling off due to poor visibility whether I was stationary or moving. So continued on for three or four miles at a very slow speed in the soaking rain. Rode out of the storm on the downhill into Watkins and had dry roads to finish off the ride.
