Spent the night in New Market, VA next to a Civil War battlefield. It is also at the foot of an epic mountain pass climb that I would be passing on today. Started early so I could get a ride in before checkout time. Probably not the best idea as I headed off into a thick fog. Course today had nine climbs listed between one and two hundred feet. It was a rolling course heading south down the valley through the foothills above the interstate and VA-11. Limped out to the bike with a still sore calf muscle but found out although walking wasn't smooth , it didn't bother me on the bike at all. Started out through town before hitting the first climb and said good-bye to the fog. Stayed in the saddle and just tried some relaxed steady climbing. Saw another cyclist out for an early morning jaunt as I descended the first hill. After that it was ride along VA-11 then offshoot onto side roads for the climbs. Traffic was light and road surfaces over the most of the ride were pristine. Was a little amused by the names of the roads. Imagine there must be a story that goes with Ten Legion Road. Most of the climbs were a half mile long with occasional grades of eight and ten percent. Downhills were fast and twisting providing some good riding. Late in the ride I rode along a four lane through a good sized village before encountering the two big climbs of the day that were also the last two climbs. The perennial climb was a highway climb a couple of miles long and the final climb was on the Flat Iron Road and turned to be a bit challenging. It was pretty much a wall on sketchy pavement. Lost a good amount of time climbing it and figured I would have a good deal of elevation in the bank for a fast descent back to my motel. Unfortunately the downhill surface was pretty poor with broken pavement and a coating of loose stones. Legs were tired by the end but it was a good course overall. Packed up and headed to Williamsburg, VA for some more cycling.
