After yesterday's easy supposed recovery day, I got a little more aggressive with today's course. Plan was to do five climbs over seventy miles of riding. Plan also involved being restrained to the climbs and then upping the effort on the ascents. Legs still didn't feel up to snuff and first climb up New Odessa was less than impressive. Still wasn't too concerned as it is my least favorite climb and legs were not warmed up yet since the climb starts a half mile from the start. Pushed a headwind out to the second climb up Sullivinville Hill. Did much better on this one as the legs started to come alive. Felt good going over the top. A few miles of downhill and a couple of miles of traffic through Horseheads put me at the base of Lattabrook. Back in the day we used to average seventeen on this very long shallow climb. Today I had good leg speed and at least a little help from the wind and averaged a little of fourteen that is well above what I did on my last ascent of this hill. Didn't feel too bad with the slower average as I was ten years younger and there was usually a boost from a drafting. After another short descent went back into the wind on CR 2. Tried popping a couple of the rollers with some success as legs were feeling good. Plan went south when I got to a detour on my way to the fourth climb up the backside of Jerusalem. Detour took me up Hogback Hill that is a good climb. Hadn't been up Hogback in probably ten years, and it hasn't gotten any easier. Had only intended to do one steep climb as had planned on mostly fast climbing. Spun it out in the granny gear without too much problem but wasn't very aggressive. Detour continued to take me upward over Hoffman Hollow then finished with a couple miles of fast descent. Detour had added a couple of miles and dropped me south of Jerusalem Hill. Made my way back and did fairly well on the climb. After descending into Elmira due to a rapidly emptying gas tank that GU packs couldn't seem to stem, I opted to forego the last climb up the west side of Harris Hill. I figured Hogback was a adequate substitute and headed on home. Made the right decision as legs were spent before I finished the course. Wasn't too painful as the last ten miles was as usual downgrade and tailwind. Fairly satisfying day as had three good climbs and only one poor one.
