Took yesterday off as my numbers were looking pretty sad and really needed a rest day. Today's plan was to check out some new roads in the Williamsburg, VA area. Drove to Freedom Park a botanical garden and wooded trail area. Headed out on a paved bike trail passing through a gully that provided a short steep climb to start the ride. Once through the park rode south toward the York River. Passed through another gully and short climb before the road flattened out. Went north of the interstate and passed through a huge housing development that was serviced by a four lane but only had one house being built so far. Sign at the entrance notified that the bridge ahead was closed and that there was no outlet. Having the bridge out would pretty much ruin my plan for the day as there aren't really many options available due to lots of rivers, dams, inlets and other water obstacles and few bridges not on major highways. Decided to chance the bridge being passible even though closed, as it would at least provide a couple more miles of decent riding even if I had to backtrack. Four lane ended at a tee with an abandoned country lane going straight ahead. Traveled the lane that was heavily encroached upon by the surrounding woods and disturbed a few deer. The lane soon devolved into a game trail before eventually ending at concrete barriers blocking off the small one lane bridge. Started thinking about the possibility of venomous snakes in the area as I dismounted and portaged across the bridge. Not sure if I would have dared to drive across it but it wasn't an issue for walking across. Once over the bridge the game trail returned to a country lane still under a wooded canopy. The other side of the bridge was very rural with numerous farms and stables. Traffic was was extremely light and roads were entertaining with numerous small rolling climbs usually with around fifty feet of elevation gain. Rode a few miles along the York River though it was never visible before heading south for a brief passage on a four lane to cross a river before returning to more wooded climbing. Ended up being a good course. It was quite warm and humid for most of the ride but the canopy provided some good cool zones.
