Had the usual discussion of what is the nastiest hill around so I went out on a ride to collect some data on my Garmin on a couple of the usual suspects. Actually had to do a few hundred feet of climbing to get to the base of the first hill on the list-Culver Hill Road. Last time I tried to ride Culver I actually got off and walked as it had been recently oiled and stoned and I was ocassionally losing traction on the steep section and thought there was a reasonable chance I would lose my balance and fall over. Had no problem this year though as the road now has a very good surface. With a good deal of standing I went up it in good form. Turned out to be .83 miles long wiith an average grade of 11.6% and a max grade of 18%. A nasty hill but using my non-NASA approved grading system it only comes out third hardest on the list. Actually it was second until I did the next climb of the day - the north face of Harris Hill. Had several miles of downhill and tailwind to allow my legs to recover before doing that climb. Felt pretty good on the first part of the climb up Harris as it starts out with a reasonable grade for the first third of the climb. Guy on a motorcycle pulled up alongside me for awhile and told me how he loves to ride the hill on his bicycle and how you really know you are having fun as you near the top. Hill does get steep near the top but only came out to be a max grade of 17%. Had to stay out of the saddle again for an extended period but it wasn't as bad as I remembered it to be but that might be because I had a good tailwind up the climb. Turned out to be second on the list mostly because of its long length being 1.21 miles long and with an average grade of 10.4%. Culver actually has the highest average grade but is much shorter than Harris or the current beast Hayes Hill. Took some time out at the overlook and ate a banana while sitting in the swings and admiring the view. Went down the western slope as I wanted to swing by the drive-in on 352 and see what was playing this week since thier website appears to be down. Got detoured going through Elmira as they appear to be repaving Water St. Got another tour through the hood and noticed sneakers hanging from the power lines over the street. Asked a friend who is more hip then I am what the purpose of it is. I thought someone had got served but then again I get alot of my information from Southpark. Friend said the shoes on the wire means that drugs can be purchased there but am not sure whether he was kidding me or not. Finished the ride with a run back down SR 14 in a headwind. Actually had a fun day riding the steep climbs and feel that I am starting to climb quite a bit better this year.
