 An Encounter With a Moron
I had 'conversation' w/a motorist on the way home Thurs, about the halfway point of my commute, that wasn't as positive as BikeLady's experience (as told on the Cycle Commute Century Challenge). He brushed by me as I was passing a parked car - he was closer to the parked car with me between the two cars than he should have been to me period. So I hollered for him to 'scoot is butt over next time' - and with the nice weather his windows were open so he did hear me. Then after more than a block he stopped about 30 yards short of the next stop sign - I guess he waited until the car behind him turned onto the side street.

I debated if I should just sit on his back bumper and wait for him to go on, or go to his right were there was sufficient room to get by (at the moment) or pass on the left - which I did. Before I could get pass him, he started accelerating not allowing me to pass and as I was even with his front window he initiated the conversation with 'you should get on the side of the road' I think; maybe he said 'get off the side of the road'. I didn't ask for him to repeat & clarify, but just informed him, using my outside voice, that he was too ‘darn’ (using a word not typically in my vocabulary) close to me! He then started going into some rant about how he could kill me, yada yada yada, while dropping some F bombs. So I said, "You’re a moron" trying to bring the confrontation to a close and ready to get on with my life. His reaction was kind of disbelief - there’s no way he could be a moron – and he went into another tirade how he could kill me. So, I said, "Thanks! I’ve been looking forward to going to Heaven!" "Heaven? Your going straight to Hell!" So I started into how the Bible promises how I can go to Heaven, and then he started quoting the 23rd Psalm as he then made a right hand turn onto another side street. So, as I rolled through that intersection I finished the conversation with my standard "Learn to drive!"

Keep in mind this was on a two-lane through street (McKibbon Rd from North Ave to Kaitlyn Dr) among a residential neighborhood, the whole conversation took place at the top of our lungs as we rolled through a couple blocks at about 10-12 MPH (he had to constantly gas & brake to keep pace w/me, and my throat was scratchy & rough when I got home), while I was on the left side of his car riding into oncoming traffic (thankfully there wasn’t any cars coming the other way).

I didn’t even get a chance to ask him about his son sitting in the back seat. I saw him looking at me through the back window when the car first buzzed by me – he looked to be pre-teen or early teenage. Needless to say, the rest of the ride home was fairly brisk as the adrenalin subsided.
