Little cool again today with a brisk north wind. Still feeling fairly worn down and have a race tomorrow so decided to avoid any climbing and stay on the flats. Went down to the high school in Watkins and rode the tomorrow's Tour de Cure twenty mile course as figured there would be few hills in it. Tour has several courses at 10, 20,40,70 and 100 miles. I knew the longer versions of the ride headed to the north with the century rounding Seneca Lake so picked the colored arrows heading south and started off. Course immediately entered the packed cinders surfaced rails to trails and went back through the swamp to Montour. Noted the lyme disease warning signs posted at the trail head and pedaled on. First couple of miles is pan flat and end with a detour through the Montour Falls then hits the trail again on the south side of the village. Once out of the village the trail climbs at a comfortable one percent railroad grade to Millport. Ten mile route called for a U-turn a mile or so up the trail and headed back toward the start. Not sure whether the course would be worth raising one hundred and fifty dollars of pledges to me but I suppose there must be some people out there with interest in it. The twenty mile version just continued up the trail. Almost lost it a couple times as I rode through two or three inch deep pockets of cinders that must have collected in low spots during all the recent heavy rain. Would be hardly noticeable on the mountain bike but had a very noticeably bad interaction with my road tires. Bailed out of the trail after crossing the highway overpass near the post office in Millport. Road back on the highway as didn't want to risk the loose stuff on the trail at higher downgrade speeds. I ride the trail on the mountain bike in the winter but really think it would be safer riding the highway than the trail and can foresee some pending crashes on the tour tomorrow.
