 Time to change the tires
Just finished changing the rear tire on two of my bicycles.

On Friday, as I was getting the bike ready for the ride home, I noticed something funny looking in the tread of its rear tire. Upon further examination I discovered that there was a cut in the tire, running right in the tread pattern. It was probably caused by something I've run over the last week or so. Once I got the tire off today and looked at it more closely, the cut was about an inch long, through the rubber, and down to the inner liner. Upon arriving at home I went down to the basement and confirmed I had a spare tire down there that I bought this past spring (when I was replacing the front tire) and just never mounted it onto the bike.

With about 5 or so miles to go in the ride yesterday, I was noticing a thump thump thump as I rolled along. My first thought is the magnet on the front wheel had shifted and was hitting the computer sensor, but no the sound was coming from the back tire. A couple more miles down the road, as I looked back at my rear tire, I noticed a wobble as the tire went around. I stopped to investigate and discovered a bead within the tire must have broke, so there was a slight bulge out both sides of a tire - kind of an S pattern as I watched it go by when spinning the wheel. I've had this before, and with only a few more miles to complete the ride, I figured I would just continue riding, being ginger when going around corners & such. Another mile or two down the road I stopped to look again and realized the tire was also bulging up and that bulge was rubbing on the frame - not necessarily good on the frame and caused me more concern about the tire holding out the last couple miles. I then decided to let a little air out of the tire – a few lbs worth – spun the tire and thought the rubbing seemed to lessen, so I let another spurt of air out, the rubbing had subsided and I completed the ride without further incident.

When I went down to the basement Friday evening looking for the tire for the other bike, I also noticed an extra tire for my road bike too – so today’s repairs did not require a trip to the bike shop first.
