 Tour de Cure Course
Great day for riding with temperature at the perfect eighty and a light western breeze. Returned to Watkins to check out the forty mile course of last Saturday's Tour de Cure. Hit the high school parking lot then headed out following the three colors of the long courses heading to the north. All three courses headed up Steuben St in Watkins and then out through haunted Irelandville. Course then followed my usual Dundee North Wind route through Reading Center then down the hill on SR 14A into Dundee. The routes parted by the school in Dundee with the seventy and hundred mile courses heading toward Penn Yan and the forty mile course heading straight north. Wasn't sure where the road went or what the profile is so looked forward to some exploration. Turned out to be the Dundee-Himrod road that has a smooth surface and a long perfectly straight climbing grade. Enjoyed the steady grade followed by a much shorted downhill back down to the Lakemont-Himrod Rd. Got a little worried as I pulled into Himrod and the course started up the hill heading toward Second Milo as my odometer indicated I needed to turn back soon. Thought I might have selected the seventy mile route in error and I would be doing some unintentional milage. It was a great day though, and so I soldiered on. Course only went a quarter mile up the hill where it turned back on itself at a fire station that had probably been a rest stop. Route returned to Watkins through Lakemont and onto SR14 at Glenora. Rest of the ride was mostly downgrades and down hills and provided some pleasant riding. Thought they might get tricky and add in another climb through Rock Stream to get off the highway but they didn't. Highway has a good shoulder though and great views and finished off a nice ride. So turned out to be a nice moderate course with one early nasty climb and the rest rolling with great views.
