 More Hill Grading
Really nasty south wind blowing today out of the south at a steady seventeen miles per hour convinced me to spend some time in the hills. Decided to check out Stits Hill road and then take a loop through Elmira and collect some data on Jerusalem Hill. To avoid the headwind I climbed up Fitpatrick hill rather than slug it out on SR14. Dropped down out of the hills on Smith Road into Pine Valley and started up Stits Hill. Used to call it Stits Hell road as I remember it being severely steep and with a poor road surface. The slope was as bad as remembered but the road surface has greatly improved as It looks relatively newly paved and no sand was left from last winter. The sand may help provide traction for autos but has always proved hazardous to me while climbing on the bike. Climbed well though and got to the top with a reasonable amount of discomfort. Using my rating system it came in as third hardest of the dozen or so I've checked out. The hill was 1.11 miles long with an 8.9% average grade and a maximum grade of 21%. The maximum grade is actually the highest of any of the hills measured so far but trails Hayes and Harris hill for difficulty. Headed down Murphey Hill and continued out by the airport and worked my way back to the southern most part of my loop on 352. Was glad that the windy section was over and the rest of the ride would be with a killer tailwind. Climbed the west face of Jerusalem Hill and descended the East face. Using my rating system both faces fail to make it unto the list as they only garnered ratings of 0.45 for the west and 0.55 for the east side. Both sides are only around a half mile long and not really that steep. Continued out on CR 1 to Breezeport where I got adventurous and started exploring some roads I have not ridden. Jackson Creek Rd turned out to be a nice long gradual climb in the country. Was a little worried that the road might deadend when the pavement started breaking up more and more as I climbed. Had planned on riding until I hit either SR 224 , SR 13 or Swartout Rd but thought I might be riding after dark if I had to backtrack. Kept riding and taking turns that kept me heading either north or west and finally came out atop Varnay Hill Rd and dropped down into Cayuta. The Varnay Hill scored in the middle of the hill list at 1.25 miles long with an 8.3% average and 13% maximum grade. Got back to civilization while it was still daylight but bonked as I passed through Alpine Junction. Luckily with the tailwind and downhill I didn't have to suffer much. Enjoyed the cooler weather and had a great day on the bike despite the wind.
