Riding this weekend went really good. I did 107 miles on Saturday (in 90+ degree heat & 90%+ humidity), and went out Sunday afternoon and did 53 miles. It was only 53 miles, but a) I did not feel as sore and zapped from Saturday's riding as I thought I would, and b) I was able to hammer up most the hills, and felt energized enough to spin up the others (unlike the bonking I experienced last weekend).
Another fun part of doing the 107 miles on Saturday was running into a couple, Tom & Jeannie(or some facsimile - sorry) I rode with most of the tail end of the Firecracker 100 back on July 10th. At the second rest stop, I spotted Tom and knew I recognized him from somewhere, and tried to recall his name - which I wasn't even in the ballpark. But we got around with our re-introductions and the headed out of the rest stop, as I had just arrived and was still in the process of restocking my bottles & eating a little bit (this was 40+ miles into the ride). When I arrived back at the start/finish area, having completed the 60-mile loop, for lunch T&J we just getting started eating their lunch. I grabbed my grub and we had a good converstion over lunch, part of which was informing them of my upcoming trek. I was able to finish lunch and hit the road with them, and pretty much ride with them during the 40-mile afternoon loop.
There were some stretches where I would get a bit ahead of them, then I would turn around ride back past them, then turn around again and catch up to them - did this three or four times and added an additional 4+ miles to my day. I added 3 extra miles to the start of my day by exiting the start/finish parking lot from a point other than the 'designated' ride start point, and thus missing the first turns and didn't realize it until I was 1.5 miles on the otherside of the little town Millstadt, IL - so I rode 1.5 miles back and finding the correct road to go down, started the ride.
Another contrast of the day was how cool & humid it was in the morning, thus causing my jersey & gloves to be drenched in sweat (sweat would almost stream from my gloves when I made a fist) and how hot and not as noticibly humid it was in the afternoon. It seemed to be drier in the afternoon, but it may have just been me not producing as much sweat and/or the heat of the sun evaporating it more efficiently.
