 Steam Mill Ramble
Wanted to do some moore climbing today and headed back up Old Odessa and climbed a little better than yesterday. Headed out toward Mechlenberg but wasn't sure where the bridge was out on 228. Climbed up to the intersection of 10 and 228 and went up Steam Mill Rd. Last time I had ridden this road was when I was in the 7th grade, forty odd years ago, on my yellow stingray bike with a banana seat. It had been dirt back then and I suspected it was still dirt, but as things seldom remain static I wouldn't be terribly surprised to find it had been paved and a couple of strip malls installed. It had remained dirt though and was still a long climb. Dirt wasn't bad to ride in as there was a packed clean area near the center but it did have quite a little washboard. Found no strip malls and only saw a couple of driveways as it remains almost a wilderness area. Got to the top and the road intersected with the Newtown Rd. Remembered Newtown coming out somewhere on SR 79 but couldn't remember where exactly and turned onto it. Newtown was mostly paved although the pavement was in poor shape and it also was interrupted occasionally by some dirt sections. Had some spectacular views of the farms and rolling hills laid out below. Kind of amazed I could be within ten miles of the house and still see terrian that looked unfamiliar. Started to descend after several miles and came out atop the long hill between Bennettsberg and Mecklenberg. Coasted down the hill and planned on heading up South Hill Rd which is a pretty good climb but ran into Olddad who was riding toward Perry City. Turned around and rode with him for a few miles and caught up on news. After parting with him, I abandoned my hill climbing and descended Skyline as it was getting dark early. Nice touring ride on a cool day.
