 Keuka-Altay
Ride started off as a round the lake ride but turned out quite different. Wasn't looking forward pushing the forty miles of headwind to Geneva as still seem to be suffering from some sort of summer flu or cold but spun the small chainring to Glenora then hit the back roads to hide out from the wind a little. Developed a saddle sore and ended up standing quite a bit as I just couldn't get comfortable in the saddle. Missed a turn just south of Dresden and ended up descending into Penn Yan. Thought about heading up SR14A and getting back on course to Geneva but ended up stopping in Penn Yan for lunch. Stopping didn't improve my attitude nor help the saddle sore. Didn't want to head right home from Penn Yan nor continue into the headwind as started to feel quite ill so opted to head south along the east side of Keuka Lake on 54 or 54A then cut back over the hills via Wayne. Stood up for most of the way down the lake to Keuka where I headed up the hill to Wayne. Turned out to be a pretty long climb but didn't have any real steep sections. Had a good time climbing to Wayne but once headed north up the hill out of town found the road to be in bad shape. Felt like I was riding railroad tracks as every seam in the highway felt like hitting a pothole. Got to the Crystal Valley road and decided to cut east and catch 14A at some point. The stone fairies had oiled and dusted the road surface recently but pushed on anyways. Stone was really deep and loose and almost dismounted on a couple of the downhills as it seemed very dangerous. Ended up just riding the brakes and having one leg unclipped to catch myself if I did lose my balance.Rode a couple of miles and took a right on an unknown paved road to get me out of the gravel and ended up coming out in Weston. Still felt poorly but was enjoying the exploration of new roads and decided against riding up Sebring Hill. Turned back into the headwind and headed back toward Dundee on 226. Turned onto the Altay road and did some climbing on the dirt. Dirt surface was far superior to the loose stone which returned on the east end of the Altay Road as the fairies had been busy over there too though the stone was not nearly as thick as Crystal Valley. Came out at Reading Center and coasted the nine miles home. Enjoyed the ride in strange lands and on bad surfaces despite the cold and saddle sores.
