I know there have been several occurrences over the years where a character in a TV show would be played by a different actor/actress. The ones I’m more familiar with are from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Vivan Banks at the beginning of season #4) and Rosanne (Becky Conner was changed starting with the 9th episode of the 6th season). I know in the case of Fresh Prince there were some lines in the dialog, especially by young Nicky Banks, referencing how Vivian looks different. My title today, however, I borrowed from the change on Rosanne, and how DJ would repeat that phrase, like he was trying to understand what was going on with Becky.
Well, my road bike, formerly(?) known as Dory, isn’t the same, but yet still very much the same. The ‘only’ thing that has changed is the frame and the fork – but not just the color of them, but the material, too. Due to a crack in the frame (where the seat tube was welded into the bottom bracket), my LBS contacted Fuji and they replaced the frame under warranty. One plus in my favor, is that Fuji no longer makes the Newest frame in my size (61 cm), so they upgraded the frame to the Roubaix RC and threw in the matching fork, too. The fork is carbon fiber, and the frame’s seat stays are carbon fiber; the rest of the frame is Fuji Altair 2 aluminum. The rest of the bike hardware is pretty much the same, the wheels & tires, the handle bars & brake/shifter levers, the seat post & seat, the bottom bracket cartridge, cranks and pedals. The handle bar tape is new – the old blue stuff needed to be replaced anyway and the blue wouldn’t have looked as well on the new black, red & white frame – and the cassette & chain are new, too – the old chain was stretched and ready to be replaced.
I’ve stated before that the Newest was named Dory (from Finding Nemo), because she was "a natural blue" and she was "built for speed." Now with the new frame she’s no longer blue, but she is still built for speed (to bad I’m not so much). So, should she be renamed? Wouldn’t it be like someone dying their hair? They don’t change their name.
Along that line, is it classified as a "new" bike?
I don’t have confident answers for either of these questions, yet, and I’m not sure if or when they will come. But this I know` after tonight’s 29+ mile ride: many pieces/parts may be the same, but due to the frame’s & fork’s characteristics she definitely does not ride the same.
