Had planned on doing the Wynecoop Creek route but still felt pretty worn out so opted to head to Waverly for a little flatter route. Took my time climbing New Odessa but still had a hard time of it. Actually saw my first rider in two weeks or so, if I don't count the Bon Ton riders recently in Watkins. He was descending Odessa Hill as I was ascending and he appeared to be having a better experience than me. Rode at touring speed to Van Etten and spent quite a bit of time waiting at various construction sites most involving paving. Had a head wind on the way out and was anticipating a headwind down the highway from Van Etten to Waverly but picked up a crosswind instead. Got a little bored and tried to pick the pace up a little and it was fun for awhile but legs were tired and body was burning through the water to handle the oppressive heat. Turned back into the headwind and headed up the second climb of the day up by O'Briens Inn. That one went better than the first but was less than a treat on a hot day. Did get a few miles of coasting down the backside to Chemung. Stopped at the Dandy Mart in Chemung and filled my bottles and my stomach with Classic Coke and Gatorade. Came back the flattest route via Maple Ave. Had poor luck today as I seemed to hit every red traffic light in Elmira. Had a religious experience as I was passing through Horseheads as I noticed a four foot diameter rainbow halo surrounding the shadow of my head on the pavement. Stayed with me for a half mile or so and while stopped at a traffic light tried to determine what was causing it. It was not anything reflecting off my bike as it traveled with the shadow of my head independent of the bike. Figured it must either be caused by a cloud of water vapor I was sweating into the air or possibly refraction from particles in the new pavement. Eventually it weakened and faded away. Had planned on catching a tailwind home but got a headwind instead. Legs were tired and had gone through 3/4 of a gallon of fluids on the ride and still felt a quart low. Got back to the house and collapsed on the floor for a recovery technique. Looked up the information on the halo on the internet and read the scientific explanations involving light wave tunneling and also checked out the religious implications. I prefered the buddist response to halos and now can claim that I have achieved cycling enlightenmaent.
