 High Point
Humidity has dropped a bit and a light south wind tempered the mid eighties heat and felt like a great day to ride as I headed out in the late afternoon. Felt frisky today and decided to do some climbing and head up to the high point of Tompkins County via Black Oak Road. Had a fair climb up Old Odessa and was very pleased that the loose tire piercing stones from the recent crappy resurfacing of SR 228 has been brushed off to the side by traffic. Kept a good pace to Mecklenburg with the tailwind and headed up the steep rollers up SR 79 toward Ithaca. Saw another friendly rider coming from Ithaca but he didn't look familiar. Turned into Black Oak and started the long gradual climb to the towers atop Connecticut Hill. Kept a good strong spin and worked up a lather. Usually turn at the end of the pavement before reaching the towers and drop down into Trumbles Corners but opted today to do some dirt and reach the peak. Last little stretch was fairly steep but by doing a little weaving around the road was able to stay on a hard packed surface. Down hill wasn't nearly as nice as the climb as there were potholes, washouts and various loose sand and rocks. Descended slower than I climbed. Had a phone call but was unable to retrieve the phone from my jersey before it stopped ringing. Couldn't call them back though as even though I could see what appeared to be a cell tower, I couldn't get a signal. Kept descending slowly on the dirt and although it looked initially like I was descending in the direction I desired, it eventually looped around and dumped me down in Trumbles Corners. Ran out of juice on the way back and ended up soft pedaling for the rest of the trip. Still turned out to be one of the most pleasant rides I've done in awhile.
