 Arnot Forest
Didn't have any events I had to rest for this weekend so decided to get back to some more climbing with the Arnot Forest Metric route. Course has four good climbs with the major climb being up county route 13 from state route 224 between Cayuta and Van Etten which gets steepish near the top. The other three climbs are basically grades between three and seven percent though they are rather longish climbs. Was a little slow on the first climb up 224 out of Montour but paced picked up well once I crested even with the headwind. Had good spin going out to the base of the Arnot climb and caught a nice tailwind up the climb. Had a good climb and spun a 21 up the climb where earlier in the year I had to stand in my 27. Once over that climb its several miles of fast downhill to Newfield and down SR 13 into Ithaca which was made even faster by the tailwind. Kept good speed up 96 out of Ithaca and had a puncture about two thirds of the way up the hill. My sealant finally took care of it but had quite a fountain of the stuff spewing until it did seal. Caught a youngish guy on the climb who was astride a mountain bike. He was shirtless and severely tattooed and wore a backpack. Not sure what mountain bikers keep in thier backpacks while riding on the road and often have thought about asking one of them but never have. Stopped in T-burg and filled the water bottles at the fountain at Not My Father's ice cream stand and also had a milkshake. Just didn't seem right using thier fountain without buying something The last climb of the day was out through Searsburg and Steamburg. Climb is six miles long and is a gradual rolling climb. Couple of the steps are near ten percent but they aren't very long. Ride is completed with along downhill from Logan to Burdett and a fast steep descent down skyline. Really great ride today but lost my focus after the milkshake and average speed was a casuality of my sloth on the downhills as I barely pedaled on the last ten miles of the ride.
