Finally got around to riding my 1987 Masi Nuova Strada to Eldridge Park that I have been planning for a while and just not getting around to it. The bike has downtube seven speed click shifters and super thin tires and is a big change from riding the newer carbon superbike with electronic semi-autonomous shifting and hydraulic disc brakes and wide low-pressure tires. Took a bit to get used to riding it and had a big adjustment to make with the braking stopping distance. I found it hard to believe that I used to downhill on this bike above sixty miles an hour in a pack of other cyclists. Steel frame though felt great as you can feel all the pedaling effort is efficiently converted to forward momentum. The ride to the park is a gradual one to two percent climb for ten miles then flat city riding. Tried to come out of the saddle a couple of times but was very unstable as the geometry is quite different from what I usually ride. Made good speed regardless on the way up for a cruising day and though it was a bit windy it was pretty nice for a fall day. Hung around Eldridge Park for a bit as they were getting set up for an event and there was a local band warming up. Thought I would make good time on the return trip with the downgrade and a good tailwind but didn't produce any consistent effort. Did find that sometime along the way I had adapted to the frame and now was comfortable out of the saddle. Even tried a sprint at one of my sprint points and was able to get up to thirty-three with thirty-five being the standard for the new fancy bike. I enjoyed the ride on the Masi though the frame is not as forgiving on my old body or maybe it is the higher tire pressure that caused some fatigue. Enjoyed the ride but am seriously thinking about upgrading the brakes as really not comfortable with the current stopping power. They are okay for riding but not sure how good they would be for unanticipated situations.
