Drove out to Harbor Creek, PA for their yearly metric. Had trouble from the start with a detour causing a delay of my arriving at the start and registration\check-in not opening until 06:50 for the scheduled 07:00 mass start. The start was delayed until 07:30 but riders started drifting off before then. I waited around until 07:30 hoping for a group to ride with but only had a pair of tandems show up at that time. I pretty much headed off alone into the chill air and started the first climb from the shore of Lake Erie up to the plateau. Didn't put much effort into the ride until it started to warm up a bit and then started to focus and decided to try to catch up to a group of as half dozen or so riders that I had seen leaving at 07:15. Thought with an hour or two of hard riding I might be able to reel them in especially if they stopped at a rest stop. Course didn't have much climbing this year and was the same course as last year. Climb onto the plateau then descend back to SR 20 and head east on the flats into NY until Westfield . The climbing was mostly in a loop around Westfield before dropping back down to SR 5 and returning on the flats to the start. After a fast descent onto SR 20 had a ten or twelve mile pull into a crosswind. Kept a good speed on the section but was unable to spot any riders ahead even when a mile or two of road was visible ahead. After pulling into Westfield there were three climbs accounting for most of the rides elevation gains. First climb had a short wall of twelve percent before the grade slacked off. Caught three single riders on that climb. The second climb was a couple miles long but only three to five percent grade. The third climb was the big one of the day but was only a couple hundred feet of elevation with a maximum grade of eight percent. Caught sight of a group of four or five more riders as I ascended and thought I would have a good chance of catching team on the flats back on SR 5 as I had taken a good chuck of time on them on the way out. Had a really fast descent of the plateau back to lake level and lost sight of the riders ahead. Started the ten mile run back west now with a following crosswind. Passed the group that was ahead of me as they stopped at a rest stop. Crossed the flat lands again and did a couple more small climbs up to the next rest stop at Northeast. Thought about stopping but still had lots of water since really hadn't drank much with the cool temperatures. Started catching and passing several riders from the shorter course that started later. Tried to get the average up to eighteen over the last half dozen miles but legs wouldn't cooperate. Ended up riding the course all alone the same as last year. This year though was a mile an hour slower. A bit disappointed at the dwindling turnout at this event. It is a fairly easy mostly flat course with only some mild climbs. Enjoyed the ride though not sure it was enough to make the trip worthwhile. They did have a well stocked picnic at the finish with live music.
