 Speed Work
Went out with Joe and Mark to do some speed work. Kind of late in the season for it but better late than never. We started up Old Odessa and after Joe's legs gave out after trying to assault the climb in the big chainring, I was able to spin away and opened up a large gap by the top of the climb. That was the highlight of my ride and turned in the best time of the year with a twelve-five average. We pretty much rode the final section of the hill together at a brisk pace and I finished with an thirteen five that was another year's best. Then the speed work started as we traded hard pulls with a strong tailwind down Smith Valley. Speeds were in the upper twenties and occasional low thirties as we pulled at our limits. Mark got away once when Joe lost his wheel, but chose not to try and hold the gap to Mecklenburg. We started trading pulls again, and Joe fell off on an upgrade section and Mark and I pulled into Mecklenburg with an eighteen average. After regrouping we traded pulls again through Perry City. We took it fairly easy between Perry City and Reynoldsville and went back at it through Bennettsburg.I let the big boys set the pace on the final short climb as I didn't want to lead out the final downhill section which I knew would be brutally fast. Didn't work out well for me though as Mark pretty much did a track stand at the top of the climb since he didn't want to lead out the descent either. Decided I'd take my lumps and hammered off the front. I knew I would need to keep the speed above forty or would suffer vicious counter attacks but was unable to get my legs to push the speed over thirty eight. Near the bottom of the hill the boys went by, and I was unable to catch the draft. Made an attempt at closing the gap but the boys were working together hard to lose me. Ran out of road and leg and couldn't catch them before the turn down Skyline. They hammered by the turn though and kept going into Burdett. I made the turn and rode slowly trying to place a large tick the bike was making when I was out of the saddle. The boys eventually realized they had missed the turn and turned around, but I had already made the descent back into Montour. We pretty much all rode our limits today and suffered greatly and had a pretty good time.
