Legs were a bit tender from yesterday's ride so didn't want to do anything too strenuous but still wanted to burn off some of the body fat plaguing my climbing. Opted for a long slow ride around Seneca Lake with a goal of maintaining fifteen miles an hour. Back in the day cycling at a steady fifteen was considered the best way to burn off fat. Not sure what current fat burning studies have determined but it most liking involves drugs or supplements. So went old school and headed up the west side of the lake into a light north wind. Getting over the first climb involved some effort to maintain the fifteen but had it back by Glenora. Did see an item of interest riding along the vineyards. It appears grape picking has gone high tech as the field full of workers has been replaced by a drivable vacuum cleaner. It looked like a reverse wood chipper with a maneuverable shoot used to suck the grapes off the vines. That was the most excitement for the west side of the lake. Found riding at a slow steady pace for a few hours to be a both mentally challenging and physically demanding although the later part was probably due to overtaxed legs. Was able to easily keep the pace through Geneva with only occasional efforts to recover the pace after some of the climbs. Opted to return via the East Lake Road that runs along the cottages on flat terrain. Also decided to pass through Samson State Park situated on the lake. Stopped using this route years ago as the pavement had fallen into disrepair making for poor riding and occasional flat tires. It appears though that some repaving has occurred providing a decent surface. It was also a risk that the bike trail on the southern section might be closed that would require a few miles of doubling back. Years past it was closed on weekdays as it was downrange of the State's firearm training station. I wasn't really concerned about getting hit with a golden BB as spend several hours a week sharing the road with texting drivers. I am always concerned with a park ranger identifying me as a revenue source though. It appears that the restriction is no longer in effect as the signs are no longer there and saw a few other people walking on the trail. A half mile of the trail is not paved and has either a dirt or crushed rock surface. Once passing through there is only a brief section before the road ceases along the lakeside and climbs up a steep grade to Willard. Lost my average up that and the subsequent climb between Willard and Lodi. But after a couple of miles or slight climbing on the secondary road wet of Lodi the downhill starts. Regained the average on the long downhill to Valois only to lose it again climbing out of the village. Had to do a bit of work descending to Watkins from Hector that again taxed my tired legs. Ended up with the fifteen but really didn't really get much pleasure from the ride but hopefully burned off some lard.
