 Four Climbs
Took three days off to get my numbers back to moderate but felt good overall and looked forward to doing a little climbing and some rolling terrain and a couple of downhills. Started out heading up Havana Glen that turned out to be especially cruel to me today. Struggled up with chest pains and only crested at a little below six miles an hour. I had started off digging myself another hole with the poor climb if I planned on getting a good average overall. Second part of the climb was out of Odessa up SR 228 to Smith Valley. Wind was blowing hard out of the north, but it didn't bother too much up the valley. Kept the speed over ten that is about average for this year. Put some effort into the rolling downgrade to Mecklenburg hoping to get the average above fourteen. Kept the speeds in the low twenties which is a bit low, but it was into an occasional stiff wind. Hammered a couple of the short climbs and rolled into town a little over fourteen and was pleased with the last section. Kept power on the pedals to Perry City and kept the average rising nicely. Had to deal with some rollers and wind to T-burg and a long uphill grade to Interlaken still into the wind. Had good speed for most of the way but lost momentum on the second half of the upgrade and the average started going the wrong way. Started the climb out of Interlaken to Lodi at a little over fifteen and kept the speed again around ten for the three miles of three or so percent grade. The average was just below fifteen at after the slight descent into Lodi and started thinking about having another fast day with the wind at my back for the next twenty some miles. Had five or six miles of good downhill to Valois but really didn't produce good numbers as the legs were running out of juice or steam or any other type of energy. Was into the sixteens after the climb out of Valois. Had a few more miles of downhill but they weren't very productive. Decided to head up Tug Hollow instead of riding through Watkins. Hill didn't seem too bad today, but it did take a chunk out of the average. Saw my only other cyclists today with two pair of riders descending the hill. Was able to get the average back above sixteen with a forty plus descent down Skyline. Not a bad ride but was a bit disappointed with the average as downhills with tailwinds are really my thing. Actually enjoyed the headwind section the most today as really like it when the old legs put out some decent power. Low point was the start up Havana Glen. Not sure how I'm going to get any better at climbing it this year.
