 Last Summer Storm
Mighty Young Joe showed up again to ride today and decided to show him some back road climbing. Weather was hot and humid again and thunderstorms threatened our ride. Started up Jackson Hill and had good legs up the climb. Had good spin and pushed the pace and took the lead on the climb. Turned out to be a fast climb and had hope that my speed on the ten percent stuff would carry over to the eighteen percent grades up the next climb through Beardsley Hollow. Usually crack near the top but had not done so on my last attempt and hoped not to do so today. Sky got dark and lighting was visible a few miles ahead of us and rain squalls were visible below us in the valley. Ran out of legs and gear as soon as we hit the steep stuff and cracked big time as Joe spun away in his compact gear. Plans for climbing glory were abandoned as I suffered up the hill in a light rain. Road deteriorates quickly near the top of the climb and turned out to be loose stone and sand rather than the packed dirt I had come down earlier in the year on the descent. Mighty Young Joe flatted and we had to stop to make repairs in the ligh,t warm rain. Finished the rough downhill and hit the pavement on SR 13 south of Sullivinville and looked forward to some high speed downgrades and tailwinds for the remainder of the ride. Unfortunately for Joe he had another blowout through a tire gash from the earlier flat. Without another tube or patches he was stuck alongside the road. We called IronDoug and made arrangements for him to airlift Joe back to the start and I kept on riding. Road dried up a mile or two and had good moderate paced finish. Had hoped for good climbing today to boost my confidence for this weekend’s race at Milton but instead came out with a sense of impending doom.
