Legs were a little sore but planned on doing the ride that got rained out on Labor Day. Headed up the hill on CR 16 by the racetrack. Nice seven mile long endeavor that is steep at the bottom but more gradual as the climb goes on and it has a couple of flattish sections to recharge the muscles. Started out strong but petered out near the end of the climb. Spun the long downhill to Coopers Plains into the headwind. Didn't really recover much and headed up Whiskey Creek out of East Corning. Was looking forward to the long coast down Meads Creek and catching a good tailwind back on SR 14. Got to the bottom of Whiskey Creek and saw the loose stone warning sign but was not overly concerned as I am running on the no tubes and thought it would be easier to negotiate the loose stone rather than climb up 225 to Caton. The road crews must have just done the stoning that morning as there was still quite a bit of oil pooled up on the road surface. Got most of the steep grades out of the way and was climbing out of the saddle when my transmission siezed. My body responded by pushing harder on the pedals which did nothing positive and I basically fell over sideways. My forearm and shin took most of the damage with several puntures from the sharp stones. My wrist also took a good shot and some swelling and a decent amount of pain ensued. Much worse damage was done to my bike. The rear deraileur hanger had snapped off, the rear deraileur was twisted, There was an 'S' bend in my chain and I snapped off the toe of one of my cleats. Bleeding didn't last long and am not sure whether the oil coating from the road helped or hindered the clotting process. Got the phone out and had a strong signal and since I wouldn't be riding the bike home, I called for a dust-off. There was no damage to the rear wheel so the deraileur had not got caught in the spokes and I also was in the midrange on the rear cassette while climbing. Looked around for something to tie off the deraileur that was dragging on the ground still attached to the cable. Coasted slowly until I found some ribbons on a pole that someone had used to advertise some sort of celebration and used them to secure the broken parts. Made it back to the Byrne Dairy at the corner of River Road and 225 and waited for my ride. Used my smart phone and ordered the parts that I would need to repair the bike while I sat on a bench and drank a Coke. Ain't progress grand! Not sure what caused the damage though I suspect that a stone may have lodged somewhere it didn't belong. Had planned to rebuid the bike at the end of this season but I guess it will be coming earlier than planned.
