 Blakeslee Hill
Headed out to ride up and measure Blakelee hill which is reputed one of the tougher climbs by riders out of the Ithaca area and also within easy riding distance for me. First though I had to de-Time trial my Vortex as the Look won't be ridable for awhile. Climbed out of Montour on Old Odessa Hill then went out on Mechlenburg road until the Cayutaville turnoff. Got my route off mapquest and had planned on staying on paved roads but soon found out I'd be riding a few miles of dirt today as the Chapman Rd lacks pavement. Surface wasn't too bad and scenery was good and I continued over the top of Conneticut Hill. Had hoped to drop down 327 but must have missed a turn as I came out on Sebring Rd and had to ride down the SR 13 instead. Missed the twisting decent of 327 but can't complain of the long, fast, scenic descent into Ithaca on the highway. Got to the base of Blakelee just at the bottom of the SR 13 hill off SR 34. Rumours are sometimes true as Blakeslee is an nasty climb at a mile and a half long with a good deal of 18% grade. Average grade was 9.6%. Wasn't sure whether to stop measuring at the town line rd or not so kept measuring to the crest even though the grade is less harsh past town line. The hill rated second on my list and only trails Hayes Hill which is longer and has a max grade of 20%. After the highpoint of the day I coasted down to what is left of Danby then headed up Bald Hill Rd. After Blakeslee, Bald Hill hardly seemed like a climb at all but I found I still had quite a bit of elevation as I made the hazardous descent down the back side on some unfriendly dirt road into West Danby. Had planned on finishing the ride on the flats through Spencer and Odessa but decided to head up Swartout Hill rather than do twenty miles of headwind. So I traded the flats for two miles of climb and twenty miles of descent which I found to be a good deal.Really pleasant riding day and afraid it might be one of the last eighty degree days.
