Going through a construction zone (Brown Rd between I-70 & Natural Bridge Rd)where they were scraping up the old asphalt to prepare it for some new and they were setting up for one lane on traffic, but both directions were still open. I was about 2/3 through the area with a couple cars following me (in the traffic lane), and an car approached from the right looking to pull out from an eating establishment. I did a little swerve to my left as pre-cautionary move. Then as I was moving back to my right (not sure why as I was approaching a traffic light and the construction zone was ending) I didn't realize that I was now in the area that was scraped up and there was a >1" lip that caught my tires and threw me off balance. I wasn't going real fast, was able to slow down and unclipped my right foot from its pedal while slowing down enough to be able catch myself. The bike still went all the way to the ground with my left foot still clipped in. My bike was laying directly in front of the car looking to 'merge' and I guess he didn't anticipate me falling because his front bumper was just a couple feet behind my bike. And the car that was behind me couldn't wait to get around me - even as I was still trying to unclip my left foot. In retrospect, other than the brief second or two where I knew I was going down I wasn’t scared of what could happen, but in the end I was just frustrated that it did happen.
More than a side note: at the intersection I was approaching I was to meet my wife whom I called not long after leaving the house, when I remembered I forgot to pack my belt. Oh, oh – that’s why I was trying to get back to my right; I was going to call my wife back to change the location (to another corner of the intersection) of where to meet me due to the construction… I did mention this little episode to her then.
