When I stepped into the elevator on my way to breakfast this morning, I saw a sign indicating that breakfast was served in the Lakeview Room. My first thought was I should probably go back to my room & grab my camera, but I didn’t. When I walked into the room, I was a little disappointed that I didn’t bring the camera. The sun was nearly fully risen above the horizon on the other side of Lake Michigan, with clear skies and calm seas – oh man! I stopped & took a picture of the lake & risen sun about 2 miles into today’s ride, about an hour after breakfast; I know, it is not the same.
Today’s route was to roll up the shore from Manitowoc through Twin Rivers, on into Twin Creeks and up to a little county park that sits on the lake (picture #2) with the Kewaunee Power Station in view on up the shoreline (not pictured). Then it was time to head west/northwest, across the peninsula through Luxemburg, and Ellisville (unincorporated) before reaching the Green Bay (body of water, not the city) side of the peninsula. I rode most of the time with David & Christi from KY (picture #3), and Don from MA and Veronica from AK (picture #4). We finally entered Door County at about the 50 mile mark of today’s ride just before stopping for lunch at Sugar Creek County Park situated right on the shore of Green Bay (picture #5). Then it was another 20 miles, continuing north and turning northeast to roll into Sturgeon Bay.
After yesterday’s ride being buffeted by the wind most of the day, I was expecting tired legs that so I would have to take it pretty easy most the day. The legs did bark a little bit the first couple miles as I was trying to get up to speed and catch a group of cyclist that had started just a minute or so ahead of me. I kept pushing myself a little bit, giving my legs to warm up and heart rate a chance to climb into the ‘active’ range. I caught up to the group and within a few miles, and road with most of them into the first rest stop. I wasn’t sure how long I would be able to keep this up, but I kept going, mostly pushed by the prominently tailwind we were experiencing with the wind being out of the south/southeast most of the day, steadily blowing between 10-14 mph. After lunch as we turned east to head into Sturgeon Bay, the wind was bad in a couple places, but I was able to continue rolling at around 16 mph (except for a few little hills we ascended). My comment to a few others throughout the ride today was, ‘A tailwind will make you stronger than you feel, or think you are.’ From time to time today, I was feeling the power. There were times I would catch up to other cyclist ahead of me, then there were times I would fall off from them usually up a hill, but would soon be closing in on them again after cresting the hill. Yes, today I was feeling the power!
