My competitive season ended with Saturday’s race in Milton and Sunday’s Skunk ride will probably be my last group tour of the year unless any opportunities come up for southern rides later in the year. My legs are pretty much trashed and no longer have a need for speed but still want to do some long slow rides on my favorite courses before daylight and warm weather run low. Headed out to the Wyncoop Creek course at touring speed. Love the course except for the first climb up New Odessa which I am really starting to dislike for some reason. Really didn’t want to hit the killer steep grade of Havana nor even the steep short section of Old Odessa so just cranked it out and counted guard rail posts to keep the mind occupied. There really wasn’t much wind today which was nice but the sun was setting fairly low in the sky and wasn’t putting out much heat. Kept a steady but low cadence for most of the ride and cranked off some decent miles up and down hills and across the flatlands. Stopped in Chemung for a Coke and some junk food and sat at the picnic table just watched people for a while. Came back across the flats via Maple Avenue and rode smoothly with the slight tail wind. My mind drifted back to some of the high speed group finishes that I used to do on the flat section and fondly remembered the high twenties tongue dragging pace. Those days are gone now and now it appears I am limited to a high teens pace. The ride back down SR 14 was mostly in the shade as the even the afternoon sun was blocked by the hills.
