 More Climbing
Did the Three Hill ride in reverse today. It still has three hills but not quite as much steep stuff in this direction. Started off up Steuben St in Watkins that turns into the Mud Lake Rd. The climb is a long one of four or five miles depending on where one calls the top as there is a brief section of downgrade. Ends up being about fifteen hundred feet of climbing total. Had a good initial push up the steepest part at the bottom through town. After that it was ride at my limit dripping sweat and trying to keep a ten mile an hour average on the upper section that is only two or three percent with an occasional steeper step. Hit a good headwind near the top that didn't really slow me down much but did help evaporate the sweat. Finally got over the top after a half hour on the climb. Normally have a fifty plus mile an hour downhill to Tyrone but the wind slowed me down a bit. Also it was the first time down the hill this year so added a bit more caution on the descent. I was able to get into the mid-forties. After a mile of flat it was up CR 22. The second climb is about four miles long and includes a section of sixteen percent pleasure. Struggled a bit on that and ended up spending another half hour just on the climb. Gets a bit easier on the downgrade to Monterey on a five mile fast section. It was back to climbing again to Townsend though it doesn't count as a climb and is just a few miles of upgrade with an occasional steep step. Final climb is out of Townsend up to the racetrack. It is a fairly easy climb of a mile long of seven percent. It does provide a great view of the lake and the valley below once at the top. It finished off with five miles of downhill with the last mile steep downhill by the hospital. Made an effort to get the average up to fifteen that would be a good day for me but couldn't quite do it. Spent too much time on the second climb. It is a fairly short ride but both challenging and fun at the same time.
