After raining overnight, the threat of more rain continued throughout the morning, but the known factor of the day was going to be the wind. The forecast called for it to continue out of the south (10-15 mph), while our route was going to be predominantly due south for 82 miles. However, the route also called for a jaunt north of Ellison Bay, up to Northport (where one would catch the ferry over to Washington Island) before it loops around and takes you right past the hotel where you started – only two riders from the group opted to do this 12 mile loop; I was not one of them!
So heading south, into the wind, right off the bat also required climbing a nice ‘little’ hill – so much for a warm up. We then made our way through Sister Bay and Ephraim before looping through Peninsula State Park. David & Christi climbed the stairs to the top of the lookout tower (picture 1 – though they are not in the picture) where they said it was windy – couldn’t feel too much of the wind from the ground because of the trees. Then Christi was kind enough to take a picture of me at the bottom of the stairs – no I did not go any higher on the stairs than what you see in picture #2!
Another element I was fighting was the beginnings of a saddle sore, which made for discomfort from time to time while sitting on the bike seat and pedaling into the wind (even more discomfort when raising my seat off the bike seat) – but as the day went on, and since it stayed fairly dry, except for some drizzle & sprinkles between the second rest stop & lunch (miles 25 – 47), the saddle sore didn’t seem to cause to much discomfort today.
A third element I was dealing with was some discomfort in my left knee. I started feeling some discomfort on Mon & Tues, before realizing my seat post as slid down into the bike frame, making my seat over an inch lower than it should have been. But the end of yesterday, and as I reached the top of the first hill this morning, it would be very uncomfortable when climbing hills and if I tried to accelerate suddenly. I took some ibuprofen at a couple of the stops today, and it too seemed to subside as the day went on.
The sun came out when it was time to stop for lunch. The third picture is a shot from the lunch stop looking east toward Sturgeon Bay, and the fourth picture is rolling along the water front making our way to the ‘concrete’ bridge (one of 3 bridges in Sturgeon Bay) to cross over the ‘bay’ and continue our southerly course.
The fifth picture shows the road heading down to the shore line, just a few miles north of Algoma, our finishing point for today. The map shows our progress to this point.
And the last picture was taken this evening (fog rolled in around 4 PM) from the balcony of our hotel room – the waves are fairly loud, though they may be small, compared to what I’m using to seeing having grown up in Southern California.
