 Dundee
Felt a little better starting out on the bike today and wanted to ride on the aggressive side as the weather forecast looks good enough that I might try to get another race in next weekend. Opted for the traditional Friday route to Dundee with a south wind that has the course running along the lake and doing most of the climbing into the wind on the return leg. Tried to get my average speed up before starting up the hill in Watkins but lost a half mile off it hitting the lights on the main drag through Watkins. Climbed steady up the hill and though it wasn't a very spectacular effort I finished it off with less than the mile an hour loss that is typical for the two mile climb. Felt decent on the false flats to Glenora. Kept the speed in the lower twenties as I no longer have the legs from the glory days when speeds in the upper twenties were the norm on that section. Tried hard on the short climb out Glenora but bogged down over the top and lost more speed than I would have liked. Things picked up on the downslope into Dundee where I found myself going much faster than planned. Legs appeared to be finally kicking in. The down side had negated the losses on the up side and even put a little in the bank for the next climb. Started climbing back out of Dundee with high expectations of a good climb and a fast final eight fast miles of downhill. Got a boost on the first steeper part of the hill as I came up on an Amish mother and child on bicycles. The boy, who looked about eight and weighed maybe forty pounds, saw me coming and began to sprint up the hill. I was surprised as he had a really good spin. Most kids I encounter always seem to equate a too big a gear with power. This wee lad was accelerating nicely up the grade. I eventually reeled him in and passed him by and was encouraged to see, after a brief glance back, that he didn't give up immediately and was in pursuit. I kept up a decent pace on the next four or five miles of mild uphill until the crest at Reading Center. My reward for the day was a really fast, strong decent. New pavement adorns the descent back to SR 14 and I got to feel the power of my engines as I pushed my biggest gear. Lost a little speed through the lights passing back through Watkins but earned an average over eighteen by the finish. Although eighteen is far from my personal best of twenty-three for the course it was much better than the fifteen averages I have been struggling for lately.
