 Round the Lake
Winds were favorable for another ride around Seneca Lake with light to no winds in the morning and an increasing north wind in the afternoon. Joe showed up and we headed out at a touring speed trying to use the miles to burn off some unwanted weight. Didn't set any records on the way up and arrived in Geneva at the north end of the lake at a little over sixteen miles an hour. At Geneva we rode into the park that now pretty much encompasses the entire end of the lake. We rode on the bike trails and roads that were previously a little rough but have been repaved to pristine condition. We had to hunt a bit to find the Canal Trail that passes under the highway on the east side of the lake. Eventually we found it, and it turned out to be the best part of the ride as we did a little exploring. It starts out quite rough but soon transitions into a hard packed surface ridable by road bikes. It was only about five miles long but had a great wooded switchback staircase that made for a short technical climb. The trail passes along a canal obviously and passes through swampland with many critters scampering about. The trail dumped us out at a canal lock in Waterloo and we headed south on RT 96 back to Ovid. We had scrubbed off quite a bit of speed on the trail, but it was very enjoyable. Instead of a series of climbs found on SR 96 B to Ovid, RT 96 is just one twenty-mile-long steady upgrade. We did had one more climb out of Valois but the last ten miles is downhill. There isn't a good shoulder over the last few miles and riding double isn't an option on the heavily trafficked SR 14, so we ended the ride taking hard fast pulls. The fast section got our average back above sixteen that was a good result for a mostly easy ninety-mile touring ride.
