After riding home from work, I turned right around and headed down to Lafayette Square for day 1 of the Gateway Cup bike races around STL this weekend. I arrived there in time to see the CAT 4 mens race, which was a fairly fast paced ride and didn't have any issues until right at the end. I snapped a shot of the winner crossing the finished line, then as I was reviewing it the peleton came through the finish line and there was a loud crack followed by several more as a chain reaciton pile up occurred sending cyclist & bikes to the ground and over each other.
One cyclist was taken off on a backboard, and a couple others were slow getting up & assisted in a manner that looked like a broken wrist or collar bone. Otherwise there was a couple dozen or so riders with torn shorts & road rash. Yikes!
Now the sun was setting and the CAT 3 men were to start. Their race went off without incident until the final lap over in turn #2.
The announcer didn't have a lot of details, and a minute or so later it looked like most riders made their way around turn #4 and to the finish line.
The came the Gateway Cup Womens Series. They were not as fast the the guys, but just as serious and intense as they completed their laps. About half way through their race I hear someone callling my name - its Robin & Doug from the Thurs Night ride. I made my way around & over to where they were at (directly across the course from me) where the picture taking was a little easier as I was no longer looking directly into the flood lights shining on the finish line.
Then after the start of the Men's Pro/Cat 1/Cat 2 race, I wondered on down into turn #4 and capture some cool video of the racers making the turn (at 25-30 MPH), before returning to the start/finish for the finale.
