Today’s route was originally slated for 110 miles, but due to a few logistical issues, it was decided that a short route was in order. So instead of ending up in Port Washington, we came back to Sheboygan, making for a 92 mile day. Skies were overcast and threatened rain most of the morning, but other than 30 seconds of a light rain there was only an occasional mist or light drizzle. The winds continued to blow out of the south to start the day, but at about mile 20, just before the first rest stop, the wind changed to come from the west. However, a good portion of the next 25 miles, taking us to the second rest stop, required us to head west.
As I was finishing the last few miles to the second rest stop, and pushing through some more discomfort in my left knee, I decided to take the SAG vehicle from the second rest stop up to the third rest stop (the lunch stop). After eating some lunch I jumped on the bike and rode the last 17 miles of the day, mostly an easterly direction thus taking advantage of the tailwind out of the west. 69.1 miles in just over 5 hours leaves an average of 13.7 mph – pretty slow by my standards.
Saturday’s route is now being lengthened from 41 miles to 71 miles to make up for the miles cut-off from today’s route.
