The intent today was to ride Johnson Hollow at a strong pace in an effort to shake out any loose parts before Saturday's race in Cooperstown. Not sure of the course in Cooperstown but the online profile looks similar in climb and length to this course. Last year's winning time looked to be just shy of twenty-two miles an hour, and I figured if I could ride Johnson Hollow solo at twenty today I might be able to be competitive this weekend. To achieve that end I would need to be at the foot of the climb at eighteen, have a decent climb and hammer the final seven miles of downhill. Having ridden at well over twenty in the past I knew it really isn't that difficult. Started out with a good spin into a slight headwind on the first seven miles of one and a half percent grade. At the first checkpoint at the foot of the hill I was a little off, clocking in at seventeen four. Legs didn't feel bad though and knew my goal would be achieved or lost on the first half mile of climb. Tried to go out of the saddle and maintain the speed early but lacked the leg and had to sit back down. Lost a mile an hour on the climb and knew that the day was lost but kept at it anyways. Had a smooth ride up the rest of the climb but couldn't make up any time. After the twelve mile mark the course points downward and took off in the big gear. Flew down the downgrade but failed to maintain speed over the last highway climb on SR 414. Still thought I might be able to salvage a nineteen with a strong downhill but that chance disappeared when I hit the red light at the top of the hill. Built my speed back up and had a strong finish across the final two flat miles back to Montour but was disappointed by missing my goal. On the other hand I was riding much better than the fifteen mile an hour averages I was struggling to get a week ago. Felt good to push the body and not have it give out.
