The Last Monday Night Ride of the Year
As the length of daylight diminish, this will be the last time this year that I go out to do the Monday Night Ride in St Charles. Next Monday I will be out of town on a business trip.

Leaving the parking lot tonight at 5:30 I knew it was still going to be a tight schedule to get back before the sunset and darkness falls. The overcast clouds moving in from the west even diminished the daylight a little sooner yet. The wind was not a problem in any direction, so I was able to be consistent with my speed during the whole ride.

As I kept pedaling along, I was watching the sunny hiding behind the clouds, and could see some red skies through a couple small breaks and around the fringe of the cloud. Then as I was coming into the home stretch, turning off of Hwy B and onto Seeburger Rd, there must have been a break in the clouds beyond the horizon, and the sun had set low enough that it was casting red and orange hues on the bottom of the clouds. Man I wish I had a camera.

One thing I kept thinking to myself during the whole ride was if I had a flat or some mechanical issue I was going to be in a world of hurt, becuase then I would definitely not make it back to the start/finish before dark, and all I have with me is a small tail light - no head light or anything like that. Yes, I made it back to the start/finish without incident and minimal light to spare, but after I drive home and pull my bike out of the truck to put it in the garage, I notice that the rear tire is now flat... How close was that?
