 Climbing to Penn Yan
I was blessed again with a warm sunny day with a light north wind. Opted for a ride to Penn Yan on the traditional route that has four good highway climbs. Felt a little frisky today and started out climbing aggressively out of Watkins. Kept good leg speed over the top and pushed the downhill in a big gear into Dundee on 14A and churned out a good time. Had another good climb on 14A out of Dundee toward Penn Yan and repeated another hard effort on the long downhill into Penn Yan turning out another decent time. Lost a little momentum going through the village on my way to the next climb across the ridge on 54A. The third climb of the day really didn’t seem like much of a climb at all and rolled into Dresden still feeling aggressive and with a respectable time. Started thinking about putting the hammer down on the last section as I worked my way up the last long highway climb to Himrod. Did the math when I crested and thought I would have a really strong ride if I could average twenty-two over the last twenty miles and that it shouldn’t be too difficult with the light tailwind. Kept the speed just shy of twenty-five for the first six or seven miles and only had the small climb by the rock wall and over the tracks north of Glenora between me and a hopefully fast long downhill section. Came out of the saddle and planned on doing the quarter mile climb in the big chain ring and immediately felt my legs turn to rubber as soon as I pushed down hard on the pedals. It appeared that I had bonked quite bad and felt so weak that I thought I might have to get off the bike and sit alongside the road until I recovered. Kept climbing very gingerly and ate all the goodies I had in my pocket even though I had to make an effort just to chew. Never did recover though and just sort of drifted for the remaining dozen miles that was fortunately downhill with a tailwind. So had a really strong near fifty miles and a near total collapse all in the same ride. Could hardly believe how quickly I had gone from feeling my oats to being toast. Still can’t complain too much about a warm sunny bike ride in late September.
