Got out fairly early this morning as it was quite warm when I arose, and the west wind was very light. Went on one of my favorite rides in the area out along Waneta Lake to Wayne. I've been avoiding it all year due to the early long climb, but couldn't really put it off much longer. The long seven mile climb comes early. Total gain up Mudlake out of Watkins is a little over fifteen hundred feet. Most of the steep stuff happens in the first mile, and then it is just a long grind to the top. Tried to keep my heart rate above ninety percent and cadence over sixty RPM and did okay for the most part. Picked up some headwind on the climb and it was welcome on the steeper stuff as it blew away the cascade of sweat I was generating. It did cause some discomfort late in the climb on the three percent sections. It also kept my speed in the upper forties down Sebring hill which generally is a fifty plus descent. Felt good and loose through Tyrone and Weston but the fun ended on the first incline after making the turn along Waneta. Had to return to the small chain ring for the remainder of the ride and spun easily. SR 230 has really improved as the surface no longer feels like riding on railroad tracks over the seams between the road sections. The section of 230 through Crystal Valley had recently been stoned but most of the loose stuff had been swept onto the shoulder. Traffic was very light so had no issues riding in the traffic lane. Finished off the climbing by mile thirty and had only fifteen miles of downhill and flats remaining. Thought I might catch a tailwind along Seneca Lake but had no joy. Had to struggle a little to get home and finished off pretty tired. Was a little disappointed the grapes didn't appear to be ripe yet and really missed the smell.
