It was cool again in the early morning but waited a few hours and it warmed up back into the ideal eighties. Felt the hills calling and decided on riding up to the high point of the county at Sugar Hill. Numbers were still moderate and didn't feel very energized so decided to just do the climbs at a relaxed pace. Plan worked for about a mile until I headed up Cemetery Hill and though it was painful I really couldn't stay relaxed on a fifteen percent grade. Recovered okay after passing the tombstones and felt fairly good with the hardest climb out of the way. Made my way over to Moreland and did the second step climb over the ridge towards Beaver Dams. Tried to stay relaxed and spin and was a bit more successful on this climb with the steeper steps only being at ten percent. Burned off some elevation with the fast descent down to SR 414 and lost a little more on the smaller downhills on the highway to the Bronson Hill Rd. Felt okay on the climb other than the fifteen plus section that found me less than relaxed. Was disappointed by the lack of Hypnos Rock that used to entertain me on the challenging section. Must be the house the rock was at has new owners with less appreciation of fine art. Last part of the climb up Bronson is a half mile or so at seven percent and runs parallel above the Glen racetrack. I could her the cars running, but the track is designed that you can't see it unless you're actually inside the fences. Got to do another fast downhill to Townsend once I was past the track. Usually, I climb Sugar Hill from the northern side, so I got to climb something I haven't done dozens or hundreds of times over the fifty years I've been riding in the county. The climb isn't as demanding as the earlier ones and was actually fairly relaxed and enjoyed the climb and the views. Of course, when I reached the highpoint, the pressure was on when I saw how low my average was. I was hoping to maintain a fourteen average that I now consider a fair average for a dedicated climbing day. I did have seven miles and a few hundred feet of elevation to burn to get the average heading upwards. Pushed the big gears on the descent and had some success occasionally climbing into the mid-forties. Did have the average barely above fourteen rolling into Watkins but as usual lost a few tics off going through the tourist traffic and uphill to my home. Really enjoyed the climbing and even though it was one of my slowest rides of the year it was one of my best rides.
