It was brisk and cool, this morning, as we left Madisonville, KY. The air temperature was around 43 degrees, so I donned my long sleeve jersey (under a short sleeve jersey – layers), as well as my tights (long cycling pants). Plus, unlike yesterday, I got out my full fingered gloves. As we made our way through our remaining miles of KY, we passed by a handful of barns that were smoking (curing) tobacco. Not that I am promoting or endorsing such a product, but the aroma that was put out by these barns was quite savory – it gave off a hickory smell, I think.
Today was a great day for a bike ride, as the weather warmed up to maybe the low 70’s, and the route today provided a great ride, too. As far as the hill climbing goes, there were a few short steep climbs, but for the most part they climbing was steady grades – quite a few I did using the big chain ring (that is the big gear attached to the pedals).
Rolling through the small(?) towns we did today was interesting, too. When we got to Elkton, KY, we had to do a three-quarter loop around the town square, because the streets were all one-way, counter clockwise. It was a little rough, though, as they were doing quite a bit of construction and there were several gaps in the asphalt about a foot to 18 inches wide, which were filled with rock. The last town we passed through, prior to arriving in Lebanon was Gallatin. As I entered the town and was rolling down one of its main street, there were several people sitting along side the road in their lawn chairs and traffic was slow getting through a couple intersections – I carefully shimmied up the shoulder to pass a couple dozen cars. Then I asked some of the spectators if there was a parade scheduled and they replied, "Yes!" I did not inquire as to the nature of the festivities – I assume something to a high school homecoming or something of the sort. This was a little before 4:00 p.m. on a Friday afternoon.
One of the other ‘side shows’ a PAC Tour cyclist can do on a tour like this is rate the hotels we stay at – I think I have eluded to some of the ‘below par’ ones we’ve seen (there have only been two that standout in that category). The Holiday Inn Express we are at tonight, though, is pretty nice. One of the categories on my rating list is the height of the shower head. Many times they are not high enough to wash my hair without bending like some sort of contortionist. Here at this Holiday Inn, though, the shower head is tall enough from someone 6’ 6" or even 8" can stand under the shower head without squatting, and enjoy the nice warm (hot) water running off the scalp and down the tired and sore muscles. How relaxing and invigorating!
Speaking of relaxing and invigorating, I need to go to sleep. Good night!
P.S. Just to clarify, when we crossed the Mississippi River a few days ago, on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, that is located between Cape Girardeau, MO and East Cape Girardeau, IL. It opened on December 13, 2003.
