Drove up SR 13 last weekend and saw that the road was finally being paved and that paving was complete, including the shoulder, on the southbound route. Weather looked kind of sketchy but I really didn't want to pass up the mid seventies weather on the last day of September. Started up New Odessa out of the saddle and thought I made a good initial effort and thought I kept a steady pace on the remainder but still the time for the climb ended up a disappointing nine minutes. Had good leg speed on the run to the junction but again failed to break thirty minutes. It really is not easy to meet the mark without a decent climb to Odessa. Still only missed it by a little and looked forward to hammering the new pavement on the long downgrade to Horseheads. Kept a high cadence out of the Junction up the next climb. Had to do a couple of miles through construction but despite the single lane of traffic I had my own six foot wide lane of new satin pavement. On the downside it started to rain on the climb. The early light rain wasn't unwelcome with the warm temperatures but it continued to increase in intensity as I continued up the hill. Was pretty happy about the climb overall as I really didn't lose too much speed off the average despite the headwind and wetness. Thunder and lighting ramped up as I started down toward Horseheads. The rain also started to pour from the sky and had some difficulty seeing as the rain was continuously washing sweat into my eyes. Still was able to keep the speeds in the mid twenties down to Hanover Square. Rain abated once I was in Horseheads and after a brief thrill of crossing the wet railroad tracks I was in the clear. Hammered the final twelve miles in the big gear and legs felt great for a change. Ended up in the mid nineteens for an average which I was happy with. Was really happy that I had a good bit of leg at the end of the ride instead of being draped over the handlebars panting. Best I've felt in the bike in months.
