 Chief Ladiga-Silver Comet Trail
Left GA and drove to Alabama for the next part of my southern adventure. Driving through Atlanta was more harrowing than descending on the bike in the rain I did yesterday. Stopped in Piedmont, Alabama for an easy ride on the Chief Ladiga Rail Trail. I had ridden this trail many years ago when I had worked in Alabama. Headed east on the route that connects to the Silver Comet Trail at the GA line and continues to Atlanta. Alabama part of the trail was in poor shape as tree roots have been growing under the macadam and causing sharp ridges. Additionally, there was also recent storm debris covering most sections of the trail consisting of broken branches, leaves and even an occasional tree across the trail. Wasn't able to get much speed up as was constantly dodging the debris. Rode about fourteen miles to the GA line where I picked up the Silver Comet Trail. The GA section was made with poured concrete that made for a much safer and faster surface. Continued for six miles and turned around as decided that forty miles would be a good goal and should be enough to spin out any damage done yesterday. Took a walk around Piedmont after the ride and was a little disappointed. Twenty years ago, the place looked like a pleasant tourist town with bike shops and ice cream stands catering to the trail traffic. Now things were boarded up or broken and it looked like a place I wouldn't want to be in after dark. Drove to Gadsden, AL my new base for three or four days.
