 How quickly things can change.
We got a phone call around 11:30 PM last night from Jacque's dad, he was having trouble breathing (again) - he left a message on Jacque's cell phone because the house phone was not functioning correctly, and her cell was in dinning room & she was in bed; I was getting out of the shower after having just gotten home from 2 softball games. She tried calling him back and got the answering maching, and was telling Vernon to pick up the phone if he could then it sounded like he knocked the phone off the hook. We called back a couple more times and kept getting a busy signal.

She got dressed and headed over there, calling 911 on the way - we weren't sure if he called them first or not, and later found out he had. Ambulance, etc. got there and broke in the front door, had Vernon on the gurney and doing CPR. We later determined he was 'out' for 15-20 minutes before the medics got there (sounds to long of time to me, but hard to say). Upon arriving at the ER, they intubated him and his heart started. However the other signs were not promising - pupils dialated, no resonse to pin pricks, etc.

Jacque's sister, Pam, had come up Tues to spend time w/grandkids - so she was able to get to the hospital pretty quickly. Their brother, Howard, was at home, about 2.5 hours away. The decision was made to keep Vernon on the machine until Howard & Pauline arrived. Not long after their arrival, they confirmed to remove the ventilator. Just before 7 AM Vernon was pronounced dead.

We meet with the funeral home (friends from church) this afternoon, to decide on arrangements. So, to say the least, my trip this weekend is in question.
