Had to take a couple of days off as dropped a heavy object on my foot in a bizarre gardening incident that caused swelling making it difficult to get my shoe on. Squeezed into it today and headed off for a short ride in chilly temperatures. Would probably be a stellar riding day in March but a bit brisk for early September. Already missing the hot weather. Started off with a climb up Fitzpatrick Hill. Legs felt good and tried to establish some speed at the foot of the climb but going out of the saddle, but it to put unwanted pressure on my damaged foot so sat back down. Stayed in the saddle for the remainder of the climb and strained a bit on the eleven percent grade before and after the bridge but got the climb out if the way with a ten mile an hour average. Not an impressive climb but the best I've done this year so had some satisfaction. Decided to try to capitalize on the decent climb and hammered the rollers to Millport Hill and did fairly well with the wooded areas helping to protect me from the stiff wind. Thought I would be in good shape if I could keep the speed up until Horseheads and catch a tailwind back down the valley. Pulled into Horseheads at around fifteen that was far better than normal but not good enough to get my average up to eighteen that is now the elusive goal for most rides. I wasn't quite able to hold a good speed over the small ascent into Pine Valley but was able to get some great speed once on the downgrade through the slot. Sailed along with speeds in the mid to high twenties. It wasn't enough though to even get near eighteen but got through the seventeen barrier fairly early. Still need some improvements on the climbing. Good day on the bike despite the wind and cold weather and damaged foot.
