Going into the Labor Day weekend, I wanted to get out and ride on Saturday and again today, in order to stay fresh for the MS Bike Ride this coming weekend. I got 40+ miles in on Saturday starting & finishing here at home. I decided to go out to St Charles, like I normally do on Monday nights to do the usual ride out there.
I don't normally go out there on holidays like today (or Memorial Day) just because I'm used to head out there straight from work; plus I'm not sure what kind of a crowd goes out and does the ride on holidays. Well, there were no other cyclists out there when I left Mueller Soccer Park at 5:15 PM. Now that's about 15-45 minutes early, but folks are at least getting there & getting ready at that time.
I was kind of glad no one was out there, then I wouldn't feel pressured to try & ride with them and could just be out there on the quite farm roads with my thoughts and contemplating what lies ahead for me & my family as a result of my mother's passing yesterday.
As I was making my way back, I did see one other cyclist still making his way out - kind of a late start. Upon returning to the park there were a couple other vehicles in the parking lot, and another cyclist rolled by me toward his minivan as I was wrapping my loading my stuff and getting ready to drive home.
I didn't have any major revelations or inspirations while riding, but still enjoyed the tranquility (if you could block out the noise of the headwind and the required exertion during the southbound legs) of the ride, none the less.
